First Reading (Jos 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b)
A reading from the Book of Joshua
Joshua gathered together all the tribes of Israel at Shechem,
summoning their elders, their leaders,
their judges, and their officers.
When they stood in ranks before God,
Joshua addressed all the people:
"If it does not please you to serve the LORD,
decide today whom you will serve,
the gods your fathers served beyond the River
or the gods of the Amorites in whose country you are now dwelling.
As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD."
But the people answered,
"Far be it from us to forsake the LORD
for the service of other gods.
For it was the LORD, our God,
who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt,
out of a state of slavery.
He performed those great miracles before our very eyes
and protected us along our entire journey
and among the peoples through whom we passed.
Therefore we also will serve the LORD, for he is our God."

Bài Ðọc I: (Gs 24:1-2a. 15-17. 18b)
“Chúng tôi sẽ tôn thờ Chúa, vì chính Người là Thiên Chúa chúng tôi”.
Trích sách ông Giosuê.
Trong những ngày ấy, Giosuê triệu tập tất cả các chi tộc lại ở Sikem, rồi gọi các kỳ lão, các thủ lãnh gia tộc, quan án, sĩ quan đến, và họ đứng trước mặt Thiên Chúa. Giosuê liền nói với toàn dân như thế này: “Nếu các ngươi không muốn tôn thờ Thiên Chúa, thì cho các ngươi lựa chọn: hôm nay, các ngươi hãy tuỳ ý chọn phải tôn thờ ai hơn: hoặc là các thần cha ông các ngươi đã tôn thờ ở Mêsôpôtamia, hoặc các thần của người xứ Amôrê, nơi các ngươi đang ở. Phần tôi và gia đình tôi, chúng tôi sẽ tôn thờ Chúa”. Dân trả lời rằng: “Không thể có chuyện chúng tôi bỏ Chúa mà tôn thờ những thần ngoại. Chúa là Thiên Chúa chúng tôi, chính Người đã dẫn chúng tôi và cha ông chúng tôi ra khỏi đất Ai-cập, khỏi nhà nô lệ. Người đã làm những việc kỳ diệu cả thể trước mắt chúng tôi và đã gìn giữ chúng tôi suốt con đường chúng tôi đã đi, giữa tất cả mọi dân chúng tôi đã đi qua. Chúa đã trục xuất tất cả những dân đó cũng như người Amôrê trên phần đất chúng tôi đã tiến vào”.
Ðó là lời Chúa.

The LORD has eyes for the just,
and ears for their cry.
The LORD confronts the evildoers,
to destroy remembrance of them from the earth.

When the just cry out, the LORD hears them,
and from all their distress he rescues them.
The LORD is close to the brokenhearted;
and those who are crushed in spirit he saves.

Many are the troubles of the just one,
but out of them all the LORD delivers him;
he watches over all his bones;
not one of them shall be broken.

Second Reading (Eph 5:21-32 or 5:2a, 25-32)
A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians
Brothers and sisters:
Be subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ.
Wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord.
For the husband is head of his wife
just as Christ is head of the church,
he himself the savior of the body.
As the church is subordinate to Christ,
so wives should be subordinate to their husbands in everything.
Husbands, love your wives,
even as Christ loved the church
and handed himself over for her to sanctify her,
cleansing her by the bath of water with the word,
that he might present to himself the church in splendor,
without spot or wrinkle or any such thing,
that she might be holy and without blemish.
So also husbands should love their wives as their own bodies.
He who loves his wife loves himself.
For no one hates his own flesh
but rather nourishes and cherishes it,
even as Christ does the church,
because we are members of his body.
For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother
and be joined to his wife,
and the two shall become one flesh.
This is a great mystery,
but I speak in reference to Christ and the church.

Anh em thân mến, anh em hãy phục tùng nhau trong sự kính sợ Ðức Kitô. Người vợ hãy phục tùng chồng mình, như đối với Chúa: vì chồng là đầu người vợ, như Ðức Kitô là đầu Hội Thánh: chính Người là Ðấng Cứu Chuộc thân thể mình. Nhưng như Hội Thánh phục tùng Ðức Kitô thể nào, thì người vợ cũng phục tùng chồng mình trong mọi sự như vậy. Hỡi những người làm chồng, hãy yêu thương vợ mình, như Ðức Kitô yêu thương Hội Thánh và phó mình vì Hội Thánh, để thánh hoá Hội Thánh, khi Người dùng nước và lời hằng sống rửa sạch Hội Thánh, ngõ hầu bày tỏ cho mình một Hội Thánh vinh quang, không vết nhơ, không nhăn nheo hay phải điều gì khác tương tự, nhưng thánh thiện và vẹn tuyền. Cũng thế, người chồng phải yêu thương vợ mình như chính thân mình. Ai yêu thương vợ mình, là yêu thương chính mình. Vì không ai ghét thân xác mình bao giờ, nhưng nuôi dưỡng và nâng niu nó, như Ðức Kitô đối với Hội Thánh: vì chúng ta là chi thể của thân xác Người, do xương thịt Người. Bởi thế, người ta lìa bỏ cha mẹ mình mà kết hợp với vợ mình: và cả hai nên một thân xác. Mầu nhiệm này thật lớn lao, tôi muốn nói về Ðức Kitô và Hội Thánh.
Ðó là lời Chúa.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Saint John
Many of Jesus' disciples who were listening said,
"This saying is hard; who can accept it?"
Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this,
he said to them, "Does this shock you?
What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending
to where he was before?
It is the spirit that gives life,
while the flesh is of no avail.
The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and life.
But there are some of you who do not believe."
Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe
and the one who would betray him.
And he said,
"For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me
unless it is granted him by my Father."
As a result of this,
many of his disciples returned to their former way of life
and no longer accompanied him.
Jesus then said to the Twelve, "Do you also want to leave?"
Simon Peter answered him, "Master, to whom shall we go?
You have the words of eternal life.
We have come to believe
and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God."

Phúc Âm: (Ga 6: 61-70)
“Chúng con sẽ đi đến với ai? Thầy mới có những lời ban sự sống”.
Tin Mừng Chúa Giêsu Kitô theo Thánh Gioan.
Khi ấy, có nhiều môn đệ của Chúa Giêsu nói rằng: “Lời này chói tai quá! Ai nghe được!” Tự biết rằng các môn đệ đang lẩm bẩm về chuyện ấy, Chúa Giêsu nói với họ: “Ðiều đó làm các con khó chịu ư? Vậy nếu các con thấy Con Người lên nơi đã ở trước thì sao? Chính thần trí mới làm cho sống, chứ xác thịt nào có ích gì? Nhưng lời Ta nói với các con là thần trí và là sự sống. Nhưng trong các con có một số không tin”. Vì từ đầu Chúa Giêsu đã biết ai là những kẻ không tin, và kẻ nào sẽ nộp Người. Và Người nói: “Bởi đó, Ta bảo các con rằng: Không ai có thể đến với Ta, nếu không được Cha Ta ban cho”. Từ bấy giờ có nhiều môn đệ rút lui, không còn theo Người nữa. Chúa Giêsu liền nói với nhóm Mười Hai rằng: “Cả các con, các con có muốn bỏ đi không?” Simon Phêrô thưa Người: “Lạy Thầy, chúng con sẽ đi theo ai? Thầy mới có những lời ban sự sống đời đời. Phần chúng con, chúng con tin và chúng con biết rằng: Thầy là Ðấng Kitô Con Thiên Chúa”.
Ðó là lời Chúa.

that the community of nations help restore them to financial health,

C. For students returning to school,
that they always be filled with the excitement of learning,
let us pray to the Lord:
D. For the sick, especially those in constant agony,
that they receive effective pain relief and know God's closeness,
let us pray to the Lord:
E. For the members of this community,
that they respect one another's differences and unite in love,
