Hôm 30 tháng 6, 2020, Anh Clayton Ward vừa tốt nghiệp chứng chỉ Associate’s degree tại trường Cao Đẳng Cộng Đồng MassBay của Tiểu Bang Massachusetts, Hoa Kỳ, và dự định sẽ làm giáo viên dạy môn lịch sử.
Anh Clayton năm nay 30 tuổi, đã bỏ học từ 10 năm trước, sau đó, xin lái xe đưa rước học sinh, ngẫu nhiên nối nghiệp ông nội và ba của anh, mặc dầu thoạt đầu anh chẳng ưa thích nghề nầy.
Theo anh Clayton, nhờ các em học sinh, anh tìm được cảm hứng để trở lại sự nghiệp đèn sách.
Hằng ngày, trong lúc ôm tay lái, anh lắng nghe những chú chim tíu tít kể bao chuyện vui từ các tiết học ở nhà trường.
Nhưng sao Anh lại chọn môn lịch sử?
Cũng lại do các em học sinh truyền cảm hứng cho Anh.
Vốn có trí nhớ đặc biệt về các biến cố lịch sử, anh khiến các em học sinh trên xe vô cùng thích thú vì mọi thắc mắc của các em về môn sử đều được bác tài giải thích thấu đáo, lôi cuốn so với cách học tẻ nhạt trong lớp. Nhiều em học sinh buột miệng: “Giá mà Chú Clayton dạy chúng em môn lịch sử thì thật là tuyệt!”
Anh quyết định ghi danh đi học từ tháng 5 năm 2019.
Vừa đi làm, vừa cắp sách đến trường, quả không dễ dàng chút nào! Ban ngày lái xe đưa đón các bạn học nhí, ban tối buông tay lái cầm cây viết. Hễ rảnh ca trực nào là lo ôn bài, làm bài tập.
Kết quả tốt nghiệp xuất sắc với phần hưởng danh dự thật xứng với với nỗ lực chuyên cần học tập của anh. Vị hiệu trưởng nhận xét rằng: một thầy giáo như anh chẳng những dạy các học sinh kiến thức sách vở, nhưng còn nêu cho các em tấm gương thành công trong việc học.
Hiện Anh Clayton đang ghi danh vào khóa mùa thu ở Đại Học Framingham, tiếp tục lấy bằng cử nhân sử học, để có thể là giáo viên dạy cấp hai.
Inspired by the kids he drove every day, a school bus driver got his college degree to become a teacher

After dropping out of college 10 years ago, Clayton Ward graduated Tuesday with his associate's degree from MassBay Community College in hopes to become a high school history teacher.
(CNN) - Driving school buses runs in Clayton Ward's family. Both his parents did it, and so did his grandfather. And even though Ward tried to avoid it, he found himself driving school buses, sharing his love for history with the kids he drove every day.
As he bussed students to and from school in the city of Framingham, Massachusetts, the younger kids would simply talk to Ward about what they did in class that day. But the high schoolers, knowing that Ward was a history buff, would ask him about particular historical events.
"Some kids were like, 'You should be my teacher' or 'I wish you were my teacher' because it was a different view, a different voice instead of hearing the same thing (from their teachers) over and over again," the 30-year-old told CNN.
Ward in front of the school bus he drove while students were still going to school before the Covid-19 pandemic.
Those conversations, one by one, reignited Ward's desire to get back into the classroom himself and finally take the steps to work towards his dream of becoming a high school history teacher.
Ward, who had dropped out of college 10 years ago, enrolled at Massachusetts' MassBay Community College in May of 2019. He would drive school buses by day and attend classes at night.
"It wasn't always easy. I would drive my route in the morning and afternoon, take a class in between shifts and take night classes and classes online to complete my degree requirements," Ward told the school. "I would think of those students and all the years I wanted to make this happen, and it helped me focus my energy."
In just one year, Ward not only completed his Associate in Arts degree in Liberal Arts, but he did it with High Honors. He earned a spot on the Dean's List every semester and received several awards at Tuesday's virtual commencement ceremony for his 4.0 GPA, according to the college.
"Clayton really exemplifies the spirit of MassBay -- resilience, persistence, and dedication," Nina B. Keery, the MassBay Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences, told CNN in a statement. "I am so proud of his accomplishments across his program and division. His future students will benefit in so many ways. They will learn about history. They will learn what it means to be a successful student. And they will learn that hard work translates into success."
Ward with the awards he received at the commencement ceremony for his 4.0 GPA.
Now, with his associate's degree in hand, Ward is headed to Framingham State University in the fall to pursue a bachelor degree in history with a minor in secondary education.
But Ward knows that all of this wouldn't have happened without those kids.
"You wouldn't think that kids can do something like that, to make such a large impression and give me the drive and ambition that I need to make the decision to go back to school," Ward said. "It's kind of crazy that such a small thing can make such an impact on your life and I just want to them for every little bit of it."
