First Reading
(Is 40:1-5, 9-11)
A reading from the Book of the Prophet
Isaiah
Comfort, give comfort to my people,
says your God.
Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her
that her service is at an end,
her guilt is expiated;
indeed, she has received from the hand of the LORD
double for all her sins.
A voice cries out:
In the desert prepare the way of the LORD!
Make straight in the wasteland a highway for our
God!
Every valley shall be filled in,
every mountain and hill shall be made low;
the rugged land shall be made a plain,
the rough country, a broad valley.
Then the glory of the LORD shall be revealed,
and all people shall see it together;
for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.
Go up on to a high mountain,
Zion, herald of glad tidings;
cry out at the top of your voice,
Jerusalem, herald of good news!
Fear not to cry out
and say to the cities of Judah:
Here is your God!
Here comes with power
the Lord GOD,
who rules by his strong arm;
here is his reward with him,
his recompense before him.
Like a shepherd he feeds his flock;
in his arms he gathers the lambs,
carrying them in his bosom,
and leading the ewes with care.

1 Thiên Chúa
anh em phán: "Hãy an ủi, an ủi dân Ta: 2 Hãy ngọt ngào khuyên bảo
Giê-ru-sa-lem, và hô lên cho Thành: thời phục dịch của Thành đã mãn, tội của
Thành đã đền xong, vì Thành đã bị tay ĐỨC CHÚA giáng phạt gấp hai lần tội phạm."
3 Có tiếng hô: "Trong sa mạc, hãy mở một con đường cho ĐỨC CHÚA, giữa đồng
hoang, hãy vạch một con lộ thẳng băng cho Thiên Chúa chúng ta. 4 Mọi thung lũng
sẽ được lấp đầy, mọi núi đồi sẽ phải bạt xuống, nơi lồi lõm sẽ hoá thành đồng bằng,
chốn gồ ghề nên vùng đất phẳng phiu. 5 Bấy giờ vinh quang ĐỨC CHÚA sẽ tỏ hiện,
và mọi người phàm sẽ cùng được thấy rằng miệng ĐỨC CHÚA đã tuyên phán." 9
Hỡi kẻ loan tin mừng cho Xi-on, hãy trèo lên núi cao. Hỡi kẻ loan tin mừng cho
Giê-ru-sa-lem, hãy cất tiếng lên cho thật mạnh. Cất tiếng lên, đừng sợ, hãy bảo
các thành miền Giu-đa rằng: "Kìa Thiên Chúa các ngươi! " 10 Kìa ĐỨC
CHÚA quang lâm hùng dũng, tay nắm trọn chủ quyền. Bên cạnh Người, này công lao
lập được, trước mặt Người, đây sự nghiệp làm nên. 11 Như mục tử, Chúa chăn giữ
đoàn chiên của Chúa, tập trung cả đoàn dưới cánh tay. Lũ chiên con, Người ấp ủ
vào lòng, bầy chiên mẹ, cũng tận tình dẫn dắt.
Đó là Lời Chúa.

us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation.

I will hear what God proclaims; the LORD—for he
proclaims peace to his people. Near indeed is his alvation to those who fear

Tôi lắng nghe
điều Thiên Chúa phán, điều Chúa phán là lời chúc bình an cho dân Người. Chúa sẵn
sàng ban ơn cứu độ cho ai kính sợ Chúa, để vinh quang của Người hằng chiếu tỏa
trên đất nước chúng ta.Đ/
Kindness and truth shall meet; justice and peace
shall kiss. Truth shall spring out of the earth, and justice shall look down
from heaven.R/
Tín nghĩa ân
tình nay hội ngộ, hòa bình công lý đã giao duyên. Tín nghĩa mọc lên từ đất thấp,
công lý nhìn xuống tự trời cao.
The LORD himself will give his benefits; our land
shall yield its increase. Justice shall walk before him, and prepare the way of
his steps.R/
Chính Chúa sẽ
tặng ban phúc lộc và đất chúng ta trổ sinh hoa trái. Công lý đi tiên phong trước
mặt Người, mở lối cho Người đặt bước chân.
Second Reading
(2 Pt 3:8-14)
A reading from the second Letter of Saint
Peter
Do not ignore this one fact, beloved,
that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years
and a thousand years like one day.
The Lord does not delay his promise, as some regard
“delay,”
but he is patient with you,
not wishing that any should perish
but that all should come to repentance.
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief,
and then the heavens will pass away with a mighty
roar
and the elements will be dissolved by fire,
and the earth and everything done on it will be
found out.
Since everything is to be dissolved in this way,
what sort of persons ought you to be,
conducting yourselves in holiness and devotion,
waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of
God,
because of which the heavens will be dissolved in
flames
and the elements melted by fire.
But according to his promise
we await new heavens and a new earth
in which righteousness dwells.
Therefore, beloved, since you await these things,
be eager to be found without spot or blemish before
him, at peace.
The word of the Lord.

8 Anh em thân
mến, một điều duy nhất, xin anh em đừng quên: đối với Chúa, một ngày ví thể
ngàn năm, ngàn năm cũng tựa một ngày.9 Chúa không chậm trễ thực hiện lời hứa,
như có kẻ cho là Người chậm trễ. Kỳ thực, Người kiên nhẫn đối với anh em, vì
Người không muốn cho ai phải diệt vong, nhưng muốn cho mọi người đi tới chỗ ăn
năn hối cải.10 Nhưng ngày của Chúa sẽ đến như kẻ trộm. Ngày đó, các tầng trời sẽ
ầm ầm sụp đổ, ngũ hành bốc cháy tiêu tan, mặt đất và các công trình trên đó sẽ
bị thiêu huỷ.11 Muôn vật phải tiêu tan như thế, thì anh em phải là những người
tốt dường nào, phải sống đạo đức và thánh thiện biết bao,12 trong khi mong đợi
ngày của Thiên Chúa và làm cho ngày đó mau đến, ngày mà các tầng trời sẽ bị
thiêu huỷ và ngũ hành sẽ chảy tan ra trong lửa hồng.13 Nhưng, theo lời Thiên
Chúa hứa, chúng ta mong đợi trời mới đất mới, nơi công lý ngự trị.14 Vì thế,
anh em thân mến, trong khi mong đợi ngày đó, anh em phải cố gắng sao cho Người
thấy anh em tinh tuyền, không chi đáng trách và sống bình an.
Đó là Lời Chúa.

1:1-8)
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Saint Mark
The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ the Son
of God.
As it is written in Isaiah the prophet:
Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you;
he will prepare your way.
A voice of one crying out in the desert:
“Prepare the way of the Lord,
make straight his paths.”
John the Baptist appeared in the desert
proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the
forgiveness of sins.
People of the whole Judean countryside
and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem
were going out to him
and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River
as they acknowledged their sins.
John was clothed in camel’s hair,
with a leather belt around his waist.
He fed on locusts and wild honey.
And this is what he proclaimed:
“One mightier than I is coming after me.
I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of
his sandals.
I have baptized you with water;
he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

1 Khởi đầu
Tin Mừng Đức Giê-su Ki-tô, Con Thiên Chúa:2 Trong sách ngôn sứ I-sai-a có chép
rằng: Này Ta sai sứ giả của Ta đi trước mặt Con, người sẽ dọn đường cho Con.3
Có tiếng người hô trong hoang địa: Hãy dọn sẵn con đường của Đức Chúa, sửa lối
cho thẳng để Người đi. 4 Đúng theo lời đó, ông Gio-an Tẩy Giả đã xuất hiện
trong hoang địa, rao giảng kêu gọi người ta chịu phép rửa tỏ lòng sám hối để được
ơn tha tội. 5 Mọi người từ khắp miền Giu-đê và thành Giê-ru-sa-lem kéo đến với
ông. Họ thú tội, và ông làm phép rửa cho họ trong sông Gio-đan.6 Ông Gio-an mặc
áo lông lạc đà, thắt lưng bằng dây da, ăn châu chấu và mật ong rừng.7 Ông rao
giảng rằng: "Có Đấng quyền thế hơn tôi đang đến sau tôi, tôi không đáng
cúi xuống cởi quai dép cho Người. 8 Tôi thì tôi làm phép rửa cho anh em trong
nước, còn Người, Người sẽ làm phép rửa cho anh em trong Thánh Thần."
Đó là Lời Chúa.
