Trong tiếng Anh, có rất nhiều tiền tố/hậu tố được dùng để tạo ra từ trái nghĩa. Tuy nhiên, 1 số cặp từ lại không tuân theo qui luật này nên người học rất hay dễ nhầm lẫn dẫn đến việc sử dụng sai trong bài. Hôm nay San sẽ giới thiệu 1 số cặp từ dễ gây nhầm lẫn này:

1. VALUABLE - INVALUABLE

Trái với suy nghĩ của nhiều người, từ 'invaluable' không phải là từ trái nghĩa của 'valuable' dù có tiền tố '-in' ở trước.

a. Valuable
= worth a lot of money = rất có giá trị
Eg: His camera is extremely valuable.

b. Invaluable
= extremely useful = rất hữu ích
Eg: The new job will provide you with invaluable experience.


2. FAMOUS - INFAMOUS

Tính từ 'infamous' không có ỹ nghĩa là 'không nổi tiếng.

Infamous
= famous for something considered bad = tiếng xấu
Eg: She is infamous for her bigoted sense of humour.


3. PRICY - PRICELESS

a. Pricy = expensive = đắt tiền
Eg: I never buy designer clothes because they are always pricy.

b. Priceless
= describes something which has a high value because it is rare, the price cannot be calculated.
= vô giá
Eg: He owns a priceless collection of cars.


4. TERRIBE - TERRIFIC

a. Terrible = aweful, bad, unpleasant
Eg: The weather was terrible in the past few days.

b. Terrific = wonderful, very good
Eg: She looks terrific in that dress.
